Brighton
The city of Brighton is the most famous seaside resort in the county of East Sussex and just 50 miles south of London, ideal for commuting. Brighton has a population of more than 400,000 people who live in the conurbation of the Brighton and Hove. Brighton is, without doubt one of the most popular, exciting and cosmopolitan cities in Britain. Brighton has come along way since Graham Greene wrote Brighton Rock about the Brighton razor gangs and the film “Quadrophenia” was made about the battles between Mods and Rockers on Brighton Beachin the 1960’s.
The Prince of Wales (later to become George IV) commissioned the Brighton Royal Pavilion in 1783. The Brighton Pavilion is one of Brighton’s a major landmarks along with the Brighton Pier and instantly recognisable and synonymous with the eclectic lifestyle that Brighton provides. Nowadays, the Pavilion houses the Brighton museum, library and art gallery and is a must to visit by everyone who visits the city. Brighton is famous for its Regency squares and terraces, the narrow and quaint Brighton lanes with their numerous antique shops, restaurants, coffee bars and boutiques, Brighton Aquarium, as well as its famous pier, night life and entertainment.
Brighton beaches are long and stretch for miles, past Brighton Marina in one direction to the King Alfred leisure centre in Hove. The pebbles on Brighton beach are more numerous than the 4 million holidaymakers who visit Brighton every year to enjoy the wide array of facilities and entertainment on offer. If you are visiting Brighton you must walk down the pier which has a good selection of white knuckle rides, as well as traditional rides for the children and hi tech computer games. Then take a stroll along Brighton, stopping off for coffee or a beer at one of the many cafes, restaurants and bars or the craft and gift shops that help make this side of Brighton so colourful.
The stunning Sussex countryside is just a few minutes drive away. The Devil’s Dyke and the famous Sussex Downs provide excellent walking, magnificent views, riding and hang gliding and scores of picture postcard villages provide a lovely backdrop to get away from the hustle and bustle of Brighton for a quiet drink on a Spring day.
Brighton Marina
The Brighton Marina complex, has been developing for the past 30 years and has to be one of the most important developments that Brighton has seen since the Brighton Pavilion was first built. Yachts and boats of all descriptions, chandlery shops, boutiques, restaurants, pubs and bars of all descriptions, make the Brighton Marina a fantastic venue for a day out. This complex is a self-contained village of modern apartments and houses over looking the marina and all the activities that take place come rain or shine.
Most of the apartments are two bed roomed, although you will find a number of variations, usually equipped to a high standard with the majority boasting a balcony. The houses are town houses of either three or four bedrooms.
The shopping centre is developing all the time and covers everything from small local stores, fashion boutiques, international restaurants and an ASDA supermarket. Entertainment covers a multi-screen cinema complex, bowling alley and if you want to get fit, a David Lloyd centre.
The Brighton Marina is not that far from Brighton centre and the more energetic amongst you will consider nothing of walking along Brighton front for a visit. Brighton Marina is very close to Sussex Square and just below Marine Gate, the last block of Flats on your way out of Brighton towards Rottingdean. It's still very easy to get a taxi or a bus, with a few routes terminating at the Marina, whilst other buses pass on the main coast road above the complex.
Brighton City Centre
The main shopping centres are to be found on Western Road and the Churchill square shopping complex, at the beginning of Western Road . High street shopping continues down North Road, past the Clock Tower with Boots the chemist on the corner of queens Road right the way down to the Old Steine. Sadly Hanningtons, which first opened in Brighton in 1808 closed a few years ago but has been replaced by a sympathetic development of boutiques.
Across the Old Steine, shpping continues up St James street which is, for the most part a pedestrian precinct or you could have chosen to turn south before crossing the Steine towards Brighton Seafront and explore East Street and the lanes. Turning North would take you into the busy and thriving North Laines and an eclectic array of Shops. You see, Brighton is not just a town where you can buy your usual shopping but an exciting, busy metropolis where it is possible to buy almost anything, if you where or who to ask. During the summer the lanes is very busy with tourists eagerly soaking up the atmosphere.
Dining out and the local nightlife
. What do you fancy? Dining out is something we Brightonians have got down to a fine art. Take you pick of Pubs, Wine bars, coffee bars and the widest range of International Restaurants catering for all sorts of tastes this side of the English Channel.. Again take a look in both The Lanes and North Laines for small locally run businesses. Alternatively a short walk down the sea front is Little Preston street, which is the restaurants centre of Brighton. It may only be 300 yards long, but you visited a restaurant a week, it would take you almost two years to work your way to the seafront and back again as you will find restaurants on both sides of the road.
The Centre of Brighton hosts the Theatre Royal on New Road where everything from ballet to plays and musicals are performed nightly. On Brighton sea front you will find The Brighton Centre, home of a diverse range of activities, from formal exhibitions, through to Pop concerts to the Holiday on Ice extravaganza. In addition several pubs have small Theatres attached. Plus an endless list of Nightclubs. These are scattered across town and are generally either "straight" or Gay.
Dr. Johnson is reputed to have said “If you are tired of Brighton you are tired of Life” and he didn’t have anything like the level of entertainment we have nowadays.
St. James Street
This is an up and coming area of Brighton and includes a number of Cafes and Bistros where you can eat outside. The majority of the Gay Bars and clubs are around this area. The bars include the usual array of Cabaret, Karaoke as well as somewhere to drink. St James Street runs into Upper St James Street where our estate agents offices are situated in Kemp Town. Probably the most chic and genteel area of Brighton. This is an extremely desirable area to live, with accommodation ranging from small flats to large Regency apartments / houses in the Sussex Square area. Kemp Town is a small self contained village community with it's own unique shopping area and diverse range of local shops.
